From the moment I learned about the principles of top-down methods, such as lithography, and the opposing bottom-up principle, I was fascinated by how precisely complex structures can assemble from individual atoms or molecules. This principle is applied in various fields, including molecular self-assembly and the chemical synthesis of nanoparticles. In my PhD, I aim to utilize these nanoparticles to integrate them into the exciting field of optoelectronics. Their ease of fabrication and tunability enable me to build low-cost near-infrared photodetectors with high sensitivity.

Project Topic: Semiconductor Nanoparticles for Infrared Photomultiplication-Type Photodetectors (B11)

Supervisors

Mentor: Dr. Johannes Benduhn
Co-mentor: Dr. Vladimir Lesnyak

The aim of this project is to concept and fabricate photodiodes based on semiconducting nanoparticles. These feature a high absorption wavelength of up to 2000 nm or beyond and are incorporated as the active layer of the device. To achieve that, establishing a reliable nanoparticle layer deposition technique is planned.

To realize this, proposed stack designs from the literature are implemented and extensively characterized using spincoating as the main deposition technique.
Further, we aim to design detectors with an increased nanoparticle layer thickness to exhibit photo-multiplication. This effect governs the generation of multiple charge carriers from only one incident photon. In photodetectors with organic materials in the photoactive layer, this is usually achieved by using trap-assisted charge carrier injection.

With this approach, we seek to develop a reliable technique for fabricating highly sensitive and low-cost near-infrared photodetectors.
