British Expert Sir Christopher Snowden is “Distinguished Lecturer” in cfaed

The cfaed will have a further top-class guest in its „Distinguished Lecture Series“. After the French Physics Nobel Laureate, Serge Haroche, in April, the president and vice-chancellor of the British University of Surrey, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, will give a talk on november, 28 at 10.15am (Festsaal Dülferstraße).
His subject is “The Electronic Adventure – Engineering a Better Future”. Sir Christopher’s presentation will start by examining the background and achievements of some of the major breakthroughs in electronics and then take a look into the potential technology of the future. This will involve a quick tour of the history of electronics, highlighting its central role in manned space exploration, the key role in mobile communications and computing as well as the wider and pervasive nature of modern electronic technology. The talk will conclude by giving some insight into some of the more recent exciting discoveries in the areas of materials, nanotechnology, graphene and their potential for use in new areas such as renewable energy and medicine. Sir Christopher Snowdon is a distinguished engineer with wide experience of the international microwave and semiconductor industry. He is President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK (since 2005). Furthermore, Sir Christopher is President of Universities UK (2013-2015) and a member of the Prime Minister’s advisory Council for Science and Technology. He also sits on the governing body of the UK’s Technology Strategy Board. His previous posts include Chief Executive Officer at Filtronic plc; Head of School and personal Chair of Microwave Engineering at the University of Leeds; Senior Staff Scientist at M/A-COM Inc. USA, Lecturer at the University of York and Applications Engineer at Mullard Ltd. Sir Christopher is also a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE, the IET and a Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute. He holds a number of awards from the Royal Academy of Engineering and the IEEE. In 2012, he received the Outstanding Career Award from the European Microwave Association. He was knighted in the 2012 New Year’s Honours for services to engineering and higher education.
The keynote is open to the research and industry community as well as the public audience.
The Snowden lecture is a special high light of the cfaed autumn research festival on November, 27 and 28.

Britischer Experte Sir Christopher Snowden spricht im cfaed
Research Festival des TU-Exzellenzclusters für Mikroelektronik vom 27. bis 28. November
Das Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed), Exzellenzcluster der Technischen Universität (TU) Dresden für Mikroelektronik, setzt seine Vortragsreihe „Distinguished Lectures“ fort. Nachdem im April der französische Physik-Nobelpreisträger Serge Haroche zu Gast war, wird nun am 28. November der Präsident und Vizekanzler der englischen Universität Surrey, Sir Christopher Snowden, um 10.15 Uhr im Dülfersaal in der Alten Mensa, Mommsenstraße 13, einen Vortrag halten. Thema ist: „The Electronic Adventure – Engineering a Better Future“. Der international renommierte Experte für Mikroelektronik wird einen Rückblick über die technischen Erneuerungen der letzten hundert Jahre geben und daran anknüpfend mögliche Entwicklungen in nächster Zukunft skizzieren. Er will auch das Potential neuer nanotechnologischer Materialien wie z.B. Kohlenstoff-Graphene für Schlüsselbereiche wie Medizin und Erneuerbare Energien ausleuchten. Sir Christopher ist seit August 2013 für zwei Jahre auch Präsident der britischen Universitäten. Er gehört ebenfalls zum Beraterstab für Wissenschaft und Technik des britischen Premierministers. Zudem ist er unter anderem Mitglied der Royal Society und der Royal Academy of Engineering. Für seine herausragenden ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Leistungen erhielt er zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, zuletzt 2012 den „Outstanding Career Award“ der „European Microwave Association“.
Der Vortrag findet im Rahmen eines großen Research-Festivals vom 27. bis 28. November an der TU Dresden statt, bei dem die cfaed-Wissenschaftler den bisherigen Forschungsverlauf gemeinsam evaluieren wollen.
