In April 2015 cfaed will have the pleasure to welcome another Research Group Leader. Pramod Bhatotia is going to build up the Research Group “Parallel and Distributed Systems” as a part of the Cluster Research Areas “Resilience” and “Orchestration”. The 29-year-old Indian just recently this month gained his doctor’s degree –with summa cum laude- at the University of Saarland, where he had submitted his doctoral thesis on the topic of “Incremental parallel and distributed systems”. As a doctoral student he had been working for the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems Kaiserslautern/Saarbrücken. Already in this time he had research contacts to high-ranking institutes such as Bell Labs, Microsoft Research and IBM Research.Central topic of his scientific work is incremental calculation. He focuses on the partial reutilization of former results to accelerate the anew calculation of results for new input values. What makes this approach interesting for cfaed, is, that it can be used to improve performance, energy efficiency and resilience. The increase of resilience through the partial reutilization of former results in combination with the cloud approaches, that were examined, too, could lead to new foundations for resilient calculations.
In mid-April, the building work for new laboratories and seminar rooms of cfaed began. Construction work of the extension to today’s South wing of the Barkhausen Building at TUD campus will last until the end of 2017. The project is led by the Saxon state company Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB) and financed with € 35 million by the Saxon State government. The installation of highly responsive, nanoelectronic and oscillation-sensitive measuring instruments will be the particular challenge for the civil engineers. This equipment will later be operated by cfaed's metrology platform Dresden Center for Nanoanalysis (DCN).

During the next few weeks, three Ph.D. students of the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) will start their research stay abroad within the Cluster's INSPIRE Grants program.Jana Kalbacova (Semiconductor Physics Research Group, TU Chemnitz) received a grant for a two-month stay at the "National Institute of Standards and Technology Semiconductor and Dimensional Metrology Division" in Maryland/ USA.Tim Erdmann (Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden) will join the Polyera Cooperation and the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois/ USA. During his stay, he will be supervised by Professor Antonio Facchetti, founder of the Polyera Cooperation and Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the NU.Susanne Leubner from Eychmüller Group (Chair for Physical Chemistry) was granted to carry out a three-month stay at "The Biodesign Institute" of Arizona State University in Tempe, USA. She will work within the "Yan Lab". Her goal is to design and realize nanometer-sized template structures made of DNA for the precise assembly of nanoparticles to produce nanophotonic hybrid structures. This short-term project aims for the realization of switchable architectures.
The cfaed INSPIRE Grants aim at supporting a lively scientific exchange by facilitating research stays abroad. Young researchers thus may benefit from this program by gaining and/ or fostering international research experience as well we getting inspirations for new research approaches and topics. Furthermore, not only the awardee but also cfaed as a cluster will benefit from enhancing our visibility within the international science community.

The Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed), Cluster of Excellence of Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), has set up a Distinguished Lecture Series where world-known scientists and experts present their pioneering research findings. Within this series, there will be a new event next week: On Thursday, 26 March 2015, the winner of the prestigious Millennium Technology Prize, Prof. Michael Graetzel of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), will visit TU Dresden. The Professor of Physical Chemistry directs the Laboratory of Photonics and Interfaces at EPFL.
