Women still have a much rarer career in science than men. The conference "BeWISE - Women in Science and Engineering" from 14 to 16 November 2018 at the TU Dresden was intended to counteract this and provide women scientists with targeted support in the qualification phase and help them to find their personal path in science. Saxony's Minister of State for Science and the Arts, Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, assumed patronage.

The lecture series "Microswimmers" combines disciplines of life sciences, and as such four of five School of Sciences' faculties: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. "Microswimmers" brings together theory and application issues, focusing on providing an excellent teaching base on this present topic. It is co-organized by Dr. Benjamin M. Friedrich, Research group leader of cfaed's "Biological Algorithms Group".This lecture series comprises 14 lectures from international speakers plus 14 reading seminars (Hauptseminare) which take place one week before each lecture and are held in a journal club style. This lecture is planned to run in the course of a full year (September 2018 - Juli 2019). Participating students are asked to read the provided articles (see Learning Material) and present an article in one of the reading seminars during the course of the lecture series.

A group of scientists has observed for the first time band-like electron transport in a conjugated two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework film (Nature Materials, "High-mobility band-like charge transport in a semiconducting two-dimensional metal–organic framework"). This semiconducting behavior, together with its cost-effective production, opens the path for employing metal-organic frameworks as electroactive materials in electronic devices.

On 27 September 2018, the Excellence Commission announced the decision on the newly funded clusters within the framework of the Excellence Strategy. The Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) is a research cluster that has already been funded for one funding period within the previous Excellence Initiative and it looks back on many scientific successes from 2012-2018. cfaed has also played a decisive role in strengthening the attractiveness of the location for the local electronics industry and for new developments. With a newly adjusted research program, cfaed planned to build on these results in a second funding period and to follow up on many of the first successes, to lead to further breakthroughs and to link up with the newly added research fields of the program.

Together with the CRTD and other partners, cfaed is co-organiser of a conference aimed at female junior researchers and junior research group leaders from selected DFG-coordinated programmes at the TU Dresden. The three-day conference taking place in the INNSIDE Hotel close to the Frauenkirche offers numerous workshops (parallel workshops in English) and coaching opportunities. During fireplace talks with experienced female professors (rolemodels), the participants will be able to get into a conversation with them on pathways in research.
