The Saxon Minister of Science and Arts, Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, congratulates the physicist and nanoscientist Prof. Oliver G. Schmidt for the being honored with the prestigious Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2018 of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Prof. Schmidt is a director of the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) and Professor of the Chemnitz University of Technology, both participating institutions of the cfaed. Prof. Schmidt was awarded the prize worth a maximum of €2.5 million for the great accomplishments in research, production and innovative application of functional nanostructures. He will also be a speaker of the first cfaed symposium on the world-changing subject of "Advancing Electronics" on 19 March 2018.

Dr. Thorsten-Lars Schmidt, research group leader of the “DMA Chemistry Group” at cfaed was appointed “TUD Young Investigator” by Prof. Dr. Hans-Müller Steinhagen, Rector of TU Dresden. With this status, TU Dresden aims to strengthen the position of excellent independent junior research group leaders in Dresden's scientific community by integrating them more closely into the faculties. TUD Young Investigators are involved in teaching activities and accepted as assessor and examiner in doctoral procedures, particularly with regard to the dissertations they (co-)supervise.

The EU FET Open project “Mechanics with Molecules” (MEMO) officially started with a two days kick off meeting at the TU Dresden. The project is coordinated by Francesca Moresco, cfaed group leader of the Single Molecule Machines Group.
The aim of the project is to construct and test single molecule-machines on a surface and one at a time, controlling the rotation and the work delivered by a single molecule-motor directly at the atomic scale. MEMO will create a roadmap for fabricating a planar mechanical calculator from the macroscopic to the atomic scale.
